Kerr sculptures and assemblages are magical. They seem to be only lifted from the heart of the earth gently stroked and manipulated slightly before coming to rest in their new incarnations as simple compilations of aesthetic imagery and subtle philosophy. The work and sweat and effort it must take to wrench the material into its eventual shape is belied by the ultimate artistic statement. His work is at once beautiful and graceful, yet thought provoking, even comical—of times simultaneously in the same piece. It is these contradictions, these counter balancing elements that characterize Kerr's art. After viewing many of his works, and then hearing the title Kerr has assigned to them, the viewer is then taken to another place—a deeper level of understanding, sometimes serious, sometimes sardonic, often times more emotional.

Brian Kerr does not create his work in limited editions, nor reproduce them in any way. Each and every piece, in a wide range of materials and categories-residential and monumental sculpture, jewelry, copper objects, wind chimes, vases, architectural design projects—is a unique, one-of-a-kind work of art. It is as though the statement Kerr makes with each, need be made only once, and anything beyond would just be redundant. He has successfully operated the Kerr Studio and Gallery in Bayfield since 1981, no small accomplishment for an artist, where he creates and sells a wide range of artwork in metal. A stroll through the gallery, is to walk through the familial heritage of the Kerr family And yet the works are about our lives, as well. And the celebration of life, as any true work of art should be.

As most of the works will suggest, there is nothing new in the world, only different ways to view it. A philosopher once said, ".. .when we behold a thing of beauty, we know it as truth. . ." And the truth is simple, otherwise it wouldn't't be the truth. Kerr's sculptures are deceptively simple. And he seems to feel that a work of art in three dimensions gives us that many more options with which to behold the truth.
